Harlem Gospel Tour - 4 hours
We head uptown and enter the gateway to the Village of Harlem, one of the most intriguing communities of New York. Legends accompany its landmarks, including the campus of City College, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Apollo Theatre, the Cotton Club, the Malcolm Shabazz Mosque, Striver's Row, the Abyssinian Baptist Church, Rucker Park. While visiting the charming neighborhoods of Sugar Hill, Hamilton Grange, Jumel Terrace and others, you will learn the history and contributions of Harlem's residents, past and present. We then enter a church to attend a typical worship service and to experience the sights and sounds of moving gospel music. We finally return to midtown or a prearranged location to end the tour.
Harlem Gospel Tour with Gospel Brunch - 6 hours
This tour is identical to the 4 hour Harlem Gospel Tour with the addition of a delicious soul-food brunch with live gospel music.
New York Photo Opts Safari - 4 to 6 hours
Bring your cameras for this one (disposables are okay)! We will have fun as we move about the city to well known landmarks as well as areas where you will see the diversity that New York is known for. We know the off-the-beaten-path locations. You will take pictures to record the rich cultures of the city as we hop off, shoot and hop back on. You will end up with cherished and unique photos documenting your trip to "The Big Apple".

Depending on your desires, we have at our disposal choices from lower Manhattan to Harlem. GUIDED WALKING TOURS: 2 – 4 hours

Lower Manhattan
Walk through the historic streets of the financial district. See first-hand the financial capital of the world. Visit Wall St, the NY Stock Exchange, Federal Hall (the original White House), the Federal Reserve Bank, Trinity Church (from the movie, National Treasure) and the first church built in New York. See Battery Park, the home of Castle Clinton, which was originally a fort surrounded by water. See the first park in New York, Bowling Green. Enter the World Financial Center and get a bird’s eye view of the footprint of the World Trade Center. See Ground ”0” up close. Enter St. Paul’s Chapel, the triage center during the World Trade Center disaster. (Moderate activity)
The Grand 3: Lincoln Center, Central Park, Rockefeller Center
This tour starts at Lincoln Center, one of the largest performing arts centers in the U.S. Home to such renowned institutions as the Julliard School, The New York State Theatre, where “The Nutcracker” is traditionally performed. The Metropolitan Opera House, Avery Fisher Hall and the NYC Public Library for the Performing Arts. Walk over to Central Park, one of the largest urban parks in the U.S. En route see the famed Tavern on the Green, Dakota, the first luxury apartment building on the upper Westside. Visit the John Lennon memorial while exploring the flora and fauna of the park. Visit the Bethesda Fountain, the centerpiece of Central Park. Walking south we will pass the 100 + year old carousel and pass through the Nature Conservancy. Exit the park on to fabulous 5th Ave. lined with designer shops & themed stores. Stroll pass St. Patrick’s Cathedral and enter Rockefeller Center. Once an herb farm, this business center is the largest in NYC and home of the famous skating rink. It is also where you will find the tallest Christmas tree during the holiday season. Beware, you may just end up on TV, since this is the home of the NBC studios where the Today Show and some of your other favorites are broadcast.

Central Park
This tour starts at the American Museum of Natural History. You will see the Diana Ross playground, the Joe Papp Shakespeare Theatre, and Belvedere Castle (home of New York’s weather station). We will explore the Rambles, take photos from The Bow Bridge, and visit the Bethesda Fountain (from “Home Alone”, “Barefoot in the Park” and “Friends”). You will see the sailboat pond from ”Stewart Little”, stroll down Literary Row and stop by the 100+ year old hand-carved carousel. You will see the newly renovated Heckscher ball fields, where the stars play. We will walk along the shoreline of the nature sanctuary as we exit the park and end the tour.(Moderate activity)
Theatre District
Encompassing the area around Broadway from 40th to 54th Sts., we will walk through the streets and alley-ways of this former Longacre Square. We will see landmark theatres of yesteryear along with the studios of ABC-TV, MTV and ESPN. You will see the many Broadway theatres within the side streets. Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock Café will be on our route. We will visit several of the themed stores such as Hershey and M and M’s.. You will see the Ed Sullivan Theatre, where the Letterman Show is broadcast. Hello Deli and the Soup Nazi’s kitchen will be on our path. We will see the shops along Music Row, where the Broadway musician shop for their instruments and accessories. You will see #1 Times Square where the famous ball drops to usher in each new year. Lights, lights & more lights will light our way as we move through the plasma-lined streets of this star-studded Times Square/ Broadway theatre district area. Who knows, we may even bump into a star.

Chinatown & Little Italy
This tour walks you through the narrow bustling streets of Chinatown Each of the streets in Chinatown possesses its own distinctive personality. Whether characterized by their stores and restaurants or their unique size and shape, the streets of Chinatown provide a fascinating cultural experience. Often overlooked, Chinatown is the site of a rich history that not only tells the story of the Chinese-American experience, but also that of early Irish, Jewish and Italian immigrants. We will walk along Mulberry St., which epitomizes the outdoor café style still prominent in Italy. This was one of Don Corleone’s shopping routes and will be the areas where we will stop for some tasty Italian treats (not included in cost of tour). Today, remnants of the neighborhood's European-American ancestry stand side-by-side with more recent Asian-inspired landmarks. (Moderate activity)
Brooklyn Bridge & Brooklyn Heights – 4-6 hours*
Our walk will take us across The Brooklyn Bridge, one of the oldest suspension bridges in the U.S, over the East River connecting the Manhattan and Brooklyn. On completion, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and the first steel-wire suspension bridge. Since its opening, it has become an iconic part of the New York skyline. In 1964 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. From the bridge you will see lower Manhattan, Governor’s Island, The Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges, Roosevelt Island, Staten Island, the 59th St. Bridge and you will have a panoramic view of Brooklyn. It was from this location that the films Spiderman and the Fantastic 4 were set. Upon exiting the bridge, we will walk on to the narrow streets of Brooklyn Heights, a historic community that was easily accessible by ferry before the Brooklyn Bridge was built. We will pass century old brownstones, townhouses and churches. This area was an integral part of the Underground Railroad during slavery. Quaint boutiques line the major arteries. We will walk on the promenade where we will have fantastic views of the lower Manhattan skyline and see the area where a number of the Bill Cosby Show segments were filmed. Group will then take the subway back to Brooklyn Bridge stop where tour began in Manhattan. *Time varies depending on the group’s ability to move efficiently.

Eastside: Grand Central, UN, Rockefeller Center
Tour starts on the steps of the Astor Library, main branch of the New York City Public Library system. We then head east to explore Manhattan’s Eastside. We will visit Grand Central Station, see the Chrysler building, the United Nations, the Trump United Nations Plaza, the late Katherine Hepburn’s home, the Citicorp building, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, Park Avenue, and Rockefeller Center, home of NBC-TV studios, Top of the Rock, the Chrystie’s Auction House, the famed Skating Rink and the Tallest Christmas tree in the state during the holiday season. Tour will end here.

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
Tour begins at the flagpole inside Castle Clinton, which is inside Battery Park. We will then board the Ferry, which will take us to Liberty Island, home of the famous Lady Liberty. We will visit the island to get information and for picture taking. We then board another ferry headed to Ellis Island, where we will visit the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. You will do genealogy research on your families at the wall of honor and on the computers, visit the great hall and registry area, where immigrants were processed, walk through the photo galleries and possibly see a documentary film. We will board another ferry headed for the island of Manhattan. Our tour will end in Battery Park. (Light activity)
 
Greenwich Village – 4 hours or more
For over 100 years, this small area below 14th Street and west of Broadway has been a Mecca to the creative, rebellious and Bohemian. We will walk through this historic Neighborhood with it’s array of brownstones, artsy shops and quaint cafes.. The location where Jimi Hendrix built the Electric Lady sound studios; Where Barbara Streisand debuted at the Bon Soir, where Richard Pryor performed weekly at the Village Gate, and where Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the Whitney Museum, where Lenny Bruce read his poetry, where Edgar Allen Poe lived and where Andy Warhol and Lou Reed created the citadel of Hippiedom at the Electric Circus on St Marks Place. We will visit Washington Square Park, where George Washington’s inauguration took place and pass through the urban campus of New York University. The Triangle Building will be one of our stops. We will experience this old but new neighborhood. (Moderate activity)

Day 1 - July 27th

Arrival at Kotoka International Airport, meet our professional Ghanian guide and transfer to hotel. Welcome dinner

Day 3 - July 29th



Breakfast and orientation at hotel. Depart Accra to Cape Coast. History will unfold the story of the slave trade. The impact is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today. Visit the slave dungeon built by the Swedes in 1653 and  after passing through a number of hands, was sold to the British. This castle also houses the West African museum, established by the Smithsonian institute in
collaboration with the Ghana government in 1994. It is a world heritage site.  
Stopover at Nglashie Amanfrom primary school and interact with students and educators.

Arrive in the Cape Coast, where we will follow the path of President Barak Obama and his family when they visited the area in July of 2009.  Check-in at our 4-Star hotel.  In the evening there will be a Panafest program dinner.

Day 4 - July 30th

After breakfast, visit Elmina slave dungeon. The site of the first Europeans’ contact with the West Africans when the Portuguese landed in 1471.Elmina slave dungeon is a world heritage monument by UNESCO. The Elmina castle was built in 1482 and it is the first European structure in sub- Saharan Africa. Then the event that we have been waiting for: The opening of PANAFEST. We will attend the PANAFEST program, with its Pomp and circumstance, its music, dance and speeches. It is here that we, as distinguished members of the African diaspora, are officially welcomed back home, A PANAFEST bazaar visit will follow then we will have dinner.

Day 5 - July 31st

After breakfast, visit Kakum National Park, which is one of the surviving forests of West Africa. Extended over 360sq km, Kakum is home to a wide variety of mammals, birds and other wildlife species, as well as
butterflies, flora and fauna. The most popular attraction is the Canopy Walkway, which is made up of 7 bridges extending 330m hanging (100) feet above the forest floor.The Canopy walkway is the only one in Africa, We will then have a shopping opportunity.

We will then participate in an enchanting night program Candle Procession Dinner.

Day 6 - August 1st

After breakfast, check-out of hotel and travel by private motor coach to Kumasi, the Ashanti kingdom. Stopover at Assin Manso for Panafest Emancipation Day Durbar. Visit the site of two former slaves from America and Jamaica whose remains were interred in 1998,during Ghana’s first
Emancipation day celebration, We will visit the river where the slaves had their last baths before they were sent to the castles awaiting shipment to Americans and the Caribbean.

Check-in at 4-Star Kumasi hotel and have dinner at hotel.

Day 7 - August 2nd


After breakfast  we will visit the Ashanti craft village, Ahwia, the wood carving village, known for the talented craftsmen who fashion royal stools, walking sticks, fertility dolls, and many other things.  Our next stop is NTONSO where artist hand stamped patterns on cotton fabrics
to make Adinkra cloths.

Our next stop is Bonwire, where kente cloth is handmade on looms.This is a generational trade and is fascinating to see.
After lunch, we visit the cultural centre .
After a full day of touring, we will have dinner at our hotel.

Day 8 - August 3rd


After breakfast, we visit the Ashanti king’s palace museum to get first hand information about the Ashanti kingdom and we see Okomfo Anokye’s sword an important symbol of Ashanti unity. The sword is the spot where the Golden stool descended from the sky and has been in place for over 300 years. It is said that The Ashanti kingdom will collapse should the sword be removed.

The rest of the day is for shopping and dinner.

Day 9 - August 4th

After breakfast, checkout of hotel and have a smooth drive through several villages on the way to Accra.
Check-in to our 4-Star hotel in Accra and have dinner. Evening at leisure

Day 10 - August 5th

After breakfast, visit Dr. Du Bois centre for Pan African Studies and library. Dr. W.E.B Du Bois’ is the founder of the NAACP and spent his final years in Ghana. On the same compound is the headquarters of the African American association  of Ghana as well as Marcus Garvey’s House. Visit the Black Star Square and The Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where he stood to
Pronounce the independence of Ghana, and shop at the Art Centre Craft Market, the largest craft market in Accra.
Dinner and rest of evening at leisure.

Day 11 - August 6th

After breakfast, last minute shopping, and packing. Farewell dinner and transfer to airport.

February 27, Sunday            New York/Salvador, Bahia

Depart for Salvador, Bahia, Brazil via overnight flight, with connection in either Sao Paolo or Rio.

 

February 28, Monday            Salvador, Bahia  (Bahia by Night)

Arrival this morning in Salvador, Bahia where you will be met by our local representatives and transferred to your hotel, the Villa Gale.

This evening you will enjoy “Bahia by Night” at the Teatro Miguel Santana. The Bahia Folklore Company (Balé Folclórico da Bahia) is one of the most respected folklore dance troupes in the world. The company performs in the intimate Miguel Santana Theatre in  Pelourinho in a seamless presentation of the multiple African traditions that underpin Bahian culture. We will see the sacred dances of the Candomblé; puxada de rede, a song by fishermen in honor of Yemanjá, the goddess of the sea; maculelê, an acrobatic stick and sword dance with origins in the cane fields; capoeira, a martial art/dance of Angolan origin and the samba de roda, a spinning, swirling version of this exuberant national dance. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.

March 01, Tuesday                        Salvador, Bahia (African Heritage Bahia City Tour)

Following breakfast at your hotel, we trace the African roots of Salvador on a city tour which combines the newer, modern section and the older Historical Center of Salvador, the Pelourinho area, so called after the pillory which stood in the main square, in front of the central slave market. This area is now a symbol of the Black Movement in Bahia and the home of many places of interest to those wishing to trace this underlying African influence. We visit the Afro-Brazilian Museum, which traces the West African origins of the city, and see the superb wooden sculpted panels of the orixá's by Salvador's most celebrated artist, Carybé. Museum entrance fee is included. We visit the Sociedade Protectora dos Desvalidos founded in 1832, 56 years before the eventual abolition of slavery. Originally a fraternity of ex-slaves who helped others to freedom, the Society still works in the community to this day. We visit the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the famous Black church, built with meager resources over a period of almost 100 years. The Casa do Benin (Benin House) nearby further investigates this permeating African influence. We look in on artists and sculptors at work and let the senses do the rest as we soak up the feel of this vibrant city. The buildings may be European but the rest is African.

 

Since Brazil is known for mining some of the highest quality gemstones in the world. In order to learn, this afternoon we attend a Brazilian gemstone workshop. Here you will have the opportunity to become familiar with the various stones and the characteristics that make them so highly prized. After the workshop, you will have the opportunity to purchase jewelry that will be custom-designed at the studio just for you to take home.  Return to hotel. During your leisure time this evening, you may want to attend an artist showcase at the hotel which will feature made-in-Brazil arts and crafts.

March 02, Wednesday            Salvador, Bahia (Full day Cachoeira)

Breakfast at your hotel. Today, we leave the city behind and drive through the oldest farmland in Brazil. This is the land of sugar-cane and tobacco plantations, peaceful colonial towns and busy country markets. We visit an experimental cacau plantation. Nearby we stop at a small but self-sufficient farmstead with its own manioc flour mill and have a great insight into rural life in Brazil. We lunch in Cachoeira, a charming colonial town in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Paraguassu River and later take a walking tour of the town with its many wood sculptors ateliers, bustling market (Wed., Fri. and Sat.) and visit the Sisterhood of the Boa Morte, a sorority which traces its origins back to the time of slavery . A journey back in time to the Brazil of yesteryear. Return to Salvador. The remainder of the evening will be at leisure. Stay overnight at the Villa Gale hotel. (B, L)

 

March 03, Thursday                        Salvador, Bahia (Full day Schooner Cruise)

Breakfast at your hotel. This morning you will be transferred from your hotel to the pier to board a schooner and cruise to two of the 36 islands in this sparkling bay. Our first stop is Frades (or Monk's) Island where we anchor at a tranquil beach, swim in the inviting waters, or relax in the sun or the shade. Then we continue our cruise to the larger Itaparica Island for lunch. After lunch we take a walking tour of the colonial town of Itaparica and visit the mineral water springs with its legendary rejuvenating properties.

After a relaxing day, we board the schooner for our return journey to Salvador with the setting sun flooding the city in its warm glow. Return to the Villa Gale hotel for overnight. (B, L)

 

March 04, Friday                        Salvador, Bahia / Rio de Janeiro (Rio Scenarium)

Breakfast at your hotel. Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Rio de Janeiro. Upon arrival in Rio, local representatives will meet and escort you to the Copa Sul hotel.

This afternoon will be at leisure, when you will  have the opportunity to enjoy walking the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. This evening you will enjoy an array of live Brazilian music at Rio Scenarium, a beautiful place to listen to good Brazilian music and enjoy dancing. Located in Lapa, where the real Carioca spirit of bohemian way of life can be felt. This house is an antique shop during the day and a live music bar during the night.  The clients are refined Brazilian people who really enjoy good music. After the show, around midnight, we will transfer you back to the Copa Sul for overnight. (B).

March 05, Saturday                        (Rio de Janeiro (Corcovado Tour)

Following breakfast at your hotel you will begin your half day tour of Corcovado Mountain.

From any place in the city, the visitor can see the most beautiful postcard of Rio de Janeiro: Christ the Redeemer statue in the mountain of Corcovado, located at  2,329 feet above the sea level and inaugurated in 1931. This tour begins in Cosme Velho's neighborhood from where the cog train starts the trip through the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world, up to the statue. Once there, a panoramic and extraordinary view of Rio will be seen, including the Sugar Loaf, the Guanabara Bay, the beaches of Southern Zone and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.

After the visit to Corcovado, the tour will continue to the São Conrado area with a brief stop at the Pepino beach from where you can appreciate the flight of the hang gliders.

Afternoon and evening at leisure. At this time you can join a free tour of the H. Stern ‘s gemstone factory and showroom,  where you can learn more about the mining procèss and actually see the gemologist at work. March 06, Sunday                        Rio de Janeiro (Neighborhood Walk Through Ipanema to the Hippie Market – for High End Made-In-Brazil Items)

Breakfast at your hotel. Full day at leisure in Rio to enjoy the many beach front activites of this wonderful and vibrant city on a beach.  This evening we you will experience a Churascarria, all you can eat barbeque, at Marius Restaurant, located in Copacabana Beach area. Here you will enjoy the luxurious sight of the most famous Brazilian beach in the world. The ambience is astonishing, ornamented with original antique pieces, prospected from old fashioned coffee farmhouses located in Brazil's countryside, creating an atmosphere of equilibrium. There will be typical Brazilian cuisine within a scene of true beauty, magic and adventure.. This cattle, and poultry and are exclusively fed with eco-friendly feed, which makes the meat more tender, healthiy and tasty..Transfers from your hotel Balance of evening at leisure. March 07, Monday                        Rio de Janeiro (Carnival Parade!)

Breakfast at your hotel. Full day at leisure and time to get ready for the event and party of your lifetime !.

Carnival is Rio's main event. It happens at the peak of summer, when “Cariocas” are at their best. Festivities attract thousands of people from all corners of the world. Carnival is a 4-day celebration. It starts on Saturday, and ends on Fat Tuesday. 

This evening you will be transferred from your hotel to the Sambodromo. The Samba School Parade at Rio´s Sambodrome is something everybody has to experience at least once in a lifetime.

The parade takes place on Sunday and Monday, with seven “Samba Schools” each time. The schools are magnificent and sumptuous, each containing approximately four thousand participants. The parade starts at 9 PM and goes on until sunlight the next day, around 6-7 AM. This samba marathon is also a fierce competition. Each year a school is downgraded from special to access group, and vice-versa.

Return to the Copa Sul hotel by shuttle bus or overnight. (B)
