FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2014 (Day... 03)

Today you will be taken on a Full day Winelands tour stopping for lunch at Moyo Restaurant at the Spier

A superb day dedicated to celebrating the glorious grape, the exceptional winelands region, and the heavenly scenery…like the breathtaking views from the historical Taal Monument near Paarl. The area’s rich with history, and we can’t help but feel it as we move through the region to experience a wine cellar tour and tasting, where you’ll learn all about the process of winemaking, from grape to goblet. We visit the exquisite little town of Franschhoek; pass by the impressive Huguenot Monument. We wind our way to the heady heights of the Helshoogte Mountain Pass to meet the charming university town of Stellenbosch on the other side. We’ve set aside ample time to stroll through this little town, absorbing the quaintness, and sneaking into the odd shop or two! A trip to the winelands isn’t complete without a wine tasting, so we organized one at Stellakaya with Ntsiki Biyela who is a resident winemaker who has a passion for red wine and has also been named Landbouweekblad Woman winemaker of the year.

Lunch will be at Moyo Restaurant at Spier in the Cape Winelands.

Moyo at Spier in the Winelands is an unforgettable outdoor dining experience that captures the essence of the unique Cape African culture. A fusion of modern sophisticated décor and distinctly African flavoured dishes create an inspiring culinary affair. Relax and enjoy the spectacular vistas while you are treated to a colourful brand of Cape African hospitality. An extensive buffet is served that is as rich and exciting as the many diverse cultures. The tree-lined garden is filled with Bedouin tents and gazebos and live performers will entertain you to indigenous theatre, dance, opera and traditional storytelling from noon until late.

Return to your hotel in the late afternoon.

After breakfast this morning, explore Cape Town’s coastline on a full day Table Mountain and Cape Peninsula tour.

PENINSULA TOUR

The Fairest Cape…and it surely is! You’ll soon see for yourself where and why it earned its name. First up, it’s the cable car to the summit of the legendary Table Mountain (weather permitting) and from there, you’ll be able to see to the end of our world, including the City and surrounding layout of this southernmost tip of Africa. Sit back and relax, we’re going to cruise along the exquisite stretch of coastline known as Millionaire’s Paradise – from Camps Bay and Clifton to the exclusive beach hamlet of Llandudno – towards the charming working harbour of Hout Bay; embark on an up-close-and-personal Seal Island cruise (weather permitting). Back on terra firma, we wind along the legendary Chapman’s Peak Drive, hugging the cliffs and relishing the breathtaking ocean views: the wild and beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, an integral part of the world-renowned Cape Floral Kingdom. Take a ride up on the funicular for magnificent views. We meander back along the coast towards the City, visiting the historic naval port of Simon’s Town and the endearing penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach. The Fairest Cape of All, that was Sir Francis Drake’s opinion…and we’re sure you’ll echo it.

Then from Langa to Khayelitsha the new kid on the block, the largest in Western Cape all swagger and strut. Large scale developments abound, housing, schools, shopping malls, clinics and many private organisations doing a marvellous job in providing social and other skills to the people at large. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2014…(Day – 09)

Enjoy breakfast this morning before a full day “Journey to Freedom” tour.

Lunch will be served at Sakhumzi’s Restaurant.

Journey to freedom

Many South Africans gave much, some gave all, to achieve a truly democratic South Africa. Come with us on this full day tour which shares some of the journey, pain and struggle of those heroes; witness the places, experience the diverse museums where these momentous, tumultuous years have been so well documented. Our day begins at the Hector Pieterson Museum, where we start to unravel the cause of the devastating riots, before travelling past Mandela House, where you have the option of visiting this small museum. Our next significant stop is the fascinating ReginaMundiChurch, site of so many of the underground meetings of the then banned political parties. Standing in here, you can feel the tension; picture the intensity, the strain on the faces of those unthinkably brave souls, committed at any cost to changing the way of life of a nation. We end our day with a visit to the legendary Apartheid Museum. This is an interactive voyage of discovery, one which takes you from the dark days of ‘whites only’ privilege, through to Nelson Mandela’s historic release.

The Apartheid Museum is a multimedia experience, with documentary film snippets, texts, sound clips and live accounts, recapturing life in the dark days of South Africa. It’s a fascinating tour, filled with tales of bravery and sadness, but ultimately, it’s a story with the right ending.

SAKHUMZI’S RESTAURANT

Sakhumzi Restaurant is nestled in the heart of Soweto in Orlando west's famous vilakazi Street. The Street has a rich historical background that boasts two Nobel Prize winners namely: Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu who happens to reside right next to the restaurant and former president Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela who's former house -turned museum is just a stones throw away. A few minutes walk will also lead you to the Hector Pieterson Memorial. Sakhumzi Restaurant specializes in typical Sowetan cuisine, from breakfast through to dinner. You can opt for a sumptuous buffet or ala carte and dessert. The menu ranges from pap, rice, dumplings, vegetables, grilled chicken, stews/curries to mogodu (trlpe), served from within the restaurant or outside in a tranquil garden setting. Sakhumzi Restaurant also has a private conference facility with seating for 10 people - so why not leave your stuffy Sandton Office Park for the day and enjoy a think-tank session in a friendly, relaxed township environment? The vibe at Sakhumzi's in the evening is fantastic and tour groups planning to pop in for a drink have been known to change their schedule and depart late at night. You also have the chance to mingle with local customers and get to understand their way of living.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2014 …(Day 14)

Enjoy an early morning open vehicle game drive. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax around the rock swimming pool or perhaps visit the nearby Sun City complex, a mere 10-minutes away by shuttle.

The Pilanesberg National Park is malaria-free and borders on the entertainment complex of Sun City. It is almost perfectly circular because it comprises the area of a 1200 million years old volcano crater with a small lake in the centre.

The park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld". Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. Virtually all the animal species of southern Africa exist here, including healthy populations of Lion, black and white Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo and Leopard - Africa's "Big Five". Bird watching is excellent with over 300 species recorded. The park offers a number of wonderful picnic spots, numerous hides for game watching, huge walk-in aviaries, safe hiking trails, safari drives at night and flights over the park in a hot-air balloon.

Sun City is internationally renowned as South Africa's premier holiday resort offering a multitude of attractions and activities. With golf and gambling, and world class hotels, Sun City is the perfect choice for a holiday. The huge range of sporting and leisure facilities include floodlit tennis courts, horse riding, nature trails, and lawn bowls, as well as jet skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and sunset cruising at Waterworld. The Valley of the Waves offers surfing on two-meter high waves to the relaxing lazy river ride. Sun City has one of the largest casinos in the Southern Hemisphere, and also offers the thrill of glamorous dancers and exciting novelty acts. The many shops offer curios, clothing, jewellery and souvenirs. The two 18-hole championship golf courses at Sun City challenge all types of golfer, and there are real crocodiles in the water feature at the 13th hole!

Later this afternoon you will go on another game drive and view the nocturnal game. Following your game drive you will have dinner at the lodge.

Juneau, Alaska

In 1880, it was slow going for Joe Juneau and Richard Harris as they searched for gold with the help of Native guides. After climbing mountains, forging streams and facing countless difficulties, they found nuggets "as large as beans."From their discovery came three of the largest gold mines in the world. By the end of World War II, more than $150 million in gold had been mined. Eventually the mines closed, but the town Joe Juneau founded became the capital of Alaska and the business of gold was replaced by the business of government. Some 30,000 people live in Juneau. Its total area makes it one of the biggest towns, in size, in the world. Only Kiruna, Sweden, and Sitka, Alaska, exceed Juneau's 3,248 square miles.Today Juneau is famous not only for gold and government but also for its breathtakingly beautiful glaciers and stunning views of both water and mountains.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan is known as Alaska's "First City" because it's the first major community travelers come to as they journey north. Located on an island, Ketchikan began life as an Indian fishing camp. The name Ketchikan comes from a Tlingit phrase that means "eagle with spread-out wings," a reference to a waterfall near town.In the early 1900s, when gold was Alaska's claim to fame, fishing and timber industries were established in Ketchikan. The growth of these industries helped make this Inside Passage port Alaska's fourth-largest city.Visitors to Ketchikan will be intrigued by its rich Native heritage, which includes the world's oldest collection of totem poles at Totem Heritage Center. The Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian are all a part of the city's colorful history. Ketchikan, with its abundance of salmon, is also a sportfishing paradise. Sightseers will be impressed with both the scenic town and its surroundings, especially Misty Fjords National Monument.

Skagway, Alaska

Skagway was the gateway to the gold fields for the thousands who flocked to Alaska and the Yukon with the hope of striking it rich. Skagway may have boasted the shortest route to the Klondike, but it wasn't the easiest.Over 100 years ago, the White Pass route through the Coast Mountains and the shorter but steeper Chilkoot Trail were used by countless stampeders. Many a would-be miner perished on the treacherous Chilkoot Trail. The gold rush was a boon and by 1898, Skagway was Alaska's largest town with a population of about 20,000. Hotels, saloons, dance halls and gambling houses prospered. But when the gold yield dwindled in 1900, so did the population as miners quickly shifted to new finds in Nome. Today, Skagway has less than 1,000 residents. It still retains the flavor of the gold rush era.

Victoria, British Columbia

Victoria exudes old-world charm and fragrant and colorful flowers are everywhere. Founded in 1843 by James Douglas of the Hudson's Bay Company, the city was first known as Fort Victoria. By 1848, Vancouver Island was a British colony and Victoria was its capital. In 1858, Victoria was a tent city and the base for some 25,000 prospectors on their way to the Frasier River gold fields. When Vancouver Island was incorporated with mainland British Columbia in 1868, Victoria became the capital of the entire province. Although it's a port city, Victoria is not as industrially oriented as Vancouver. The harbors, especially Inner Harbour, are dotted with pleasure craft, ferries and floatplanes. The city is renowned for its beautiful gardens, charming houses and very British feel.

Seattle, Washington

Seattle is a young city with a rich history. Settlers first landed at Alki Point in 1851 and named the area after Sealth, the Suquamish Indian chief who befriended them. Rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1889, "The Emerald City" has a legacy of vision and strength. Seattle has hosted two World's Fairs (1909 and 1962) and is the birthplace of two modern marvels, Boeing and Microsoft.Known for its rainy climate, Seattle actually averages less annual rainfall than many East Coast cities. The mild weather, spectacular natural surroundings and rich cultural diversity attract visitors from around the world.

PORTS

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands are America's paradise, offering an easygoing blend of island ways and American practicality. St. Thomas, capital of the island group, offers every imaginable sport: snorkeling, golfing, hiking, and sailing. Just a few miles away lie St. John and Virgin Islands National Park. Stunning mountain scenery, crystalline waters, and white-sand beaches with palms swaying in the breeze--the US Virgin Islands are truly a slice of paradise. The harbor is easily one of the Caribbean's most scenic. The United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark for 25 million in gold. St. Thomas has the reputation as a duty free-mecca for shopping.

Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

The largest of the British Leeward Islands, Antigua (pronounced an-tee-ga) boasts one of the Caribbean's most spectacular coastlines with secluded coves and sun-drenched beaches. The island's rolling hills are dotted with stone sugar mills, relics from the bygone era when sugar was king. Historic Nelson's Dockyard, where Admiral Horatio Nelson quartered his fleet in 1784, attests to Antigua's long and colorful nautical history during colonial times. And St. John's, the island's bustling capital, offers visitors a wealth of boutiques, restaurants and pubs.

Barbados

Barbados is one of the few Caribbean islands solely colonized by one nation. No wonder Bajans describe their country as being "more English than England sheself," that names like Worthing and Hastings abound. But look around and you know you are not in England: Rich and fertile tropical fields meet a glistening, azure sea. The soft pastels of old chattel houses blend with the vibrant reds, oranges, and greens of roadside fruit stands. In short, Barbados exudes a charm all its own. Perhaps it is due to Bajan culture, that celebrated blend of English tradition and the African heritage brought to the island by slaves imported to work the sugar plantations. The potent brew which results flavors every aspect of island life, from music, dance and art, to religion, language and food.

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad, the birthplace of steel pan and calypso music, is one of the Caribbean's most vibrant and interesting destinations. The island and its capital city, Port of Spain, are both industrial and cosmopolitan. In fact, Trinidad and Tobago is the largest oil exporter in the Western Hemisphere and one of the most industrialized nations in the West Indies. About the size of Delaware, the island of Trinidad boasts a profusion of floral growth and an incredibly diverse population. Once a prime destination for business travelers, it is now becoming a serious vacation destination. There is plenty to see here, from the Asa Wright Nature Center, devoted to naturalists and bird watchers, to the more traditional tourist attractions like the Queen's Park Savannah, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the Magnificent Seven, a strand of impressive colonial houses reflecting Trinidad's unique heritage. Port of Spain serves as your gateway to this lush tropical island with echoes of its colonial past.

Fortaleza, Brazil
Brazil's fifth largest city began life in 1654 as the Dutch fortress of Shoonenbroch. Soon captured by the Portuguese, the citadel was renamed Fortaleza de Pequena de Braganca. While Fortaleza has been the capital of Ceara State since 1799, the city's true growth came in the second half of the 20th century as Brazilians began flocking to Northeastern Brazil, drawn by the area's superb climate and beaches. Today, Fortaleza is a thriving city of some two million souls.Ceara State was the first state in Brazil to abolish slavery at the end of the 19th century. While travelers instinctively head for such famous beaches as Cumbuco, historic Fortaleza offers treasures of its own.

Salvador, Brazil
The capital of Brazil's Bahia State, Salvador boasts a languid tropical climate, miles of pristine beaches, and lush tropical vegetation. The city is also home to over 165 churches - and the densest concentration of Baroque architecture in Latin America. Little wonder that this former capital of Brazil, founded in 1549, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The heart of Salvador's historic city center is the Pelourinho District - named after the pillory where prisoners and slaves were once punished. The district's 17th-century buildings are today home to chic boutiques and galleries.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
"Passionate" best captures the wild beauty and heady sensuality that is Rio de Janeiro. For Rio is the Cidade Maravilhosa - the "Marvelous City" that throbs to a samba beat and revels in the hedonism of Carnival. There is no place on Earth like Rio - as the city natives, the famed Cariocas, delight in telling you. The geographical facts read like dry dust: over five million souls live in the city, another four million live in the surrounding suburbs, the metropolis is the cultural center of Brazil. The reality is Rio: the white sand beaches of Copacabana, the swaying palm trees, the immense statue of Christ the Redeemer and always the never-ending rhythm of life lived with passionate intensity.Founded in the early 16th century, Rio was once the capital of Brazil. The city remains the nation's cultural and spiritual center, an amalgam of Latin and African cultures.

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Founded in the early 16th century, Buenos Aires was transformed from a colonial port into a cosmopolitan metropolis - the "Paris of the South" - by the cattle boom of the 1880s. As in the American West, boom was followed by bust. But that did not stop Buenos Aires from becoming the city it is today. With its air of haunted grandeur, Buenos Aires is a place of icy intellect and smoldering passion. It is a city where the elegant Colon Theater, one of the world's great opera houses, stands in counterpoint to the working class barrios that gave birth to the tango. Perhaps the city's engimas and contradictions are best embodied by its two most famous citizens - the reclusive librarian and literary genius Jorge Luis Borges and the showgirl turned First Lady, Evita Peron.

The "Paris of the South" flaunts its European heritage. One of the pleasures of Buenos Aires is simply absorbing its charm and flavor, from Parisian-style confiterias - cafés - to the city's popular tango clubs.

At the end of the 19th century, tango started to spread and mix slowly into the communities and lives of the natives and immigrants of Buenos Aires. The neighborhood of El Abasto, one of ithe most picturesque quarters of the city, witnessed the birth of an undisputed idol: Carlos Gardel, “el Morocho del Abasto” who became known as the international icon of Tango.

In the neighborhood of Abasto, on the street corner that now bears his name and a statue in his honor, there was a restaurant called “El Chanta Cuatro”. where Carlos Gardel and his friends used to go for dining, singing, or simply waiting for the following day sunrise. More than 100 years later, history repeated itself and “Esquina Carlos Gardel”, was inaugurated on the same location.

"Charlie and I really enjoyed our trip. It took 2 years to find the right tour operators that we would fit well with, and we were fortunate to find Equator3 Tours. The entire trip (Ghana Panafest, 2011) so educational and so well worth the travel expense and time. We felt totally relaxed and comfortable throughout the trip. Your oversight of all of the partipants in the group, added with the knowledge of the tour guide was exceptional. You have a great team! I loved the air conditioned motor coach as it was comfortable and provided an excellent view of the areas and scenery. It was all good!!!. Thank you so much."

"This trip (African Heritage Tour 2009 - Ghana) was spectacular...I just wish I could get every African-American to see the need to go to Africa. We have so little knowledge of who we really are and I believe a visit there would help us to redeem our self-respect."

Jessica Jemison, St. Thomas, VI 2009

"Although I lived in Ghana for a year, I did not see and experience as much as I did in the ten days on the Equator3 African Heritage Tour. As a post graduate student at the Institute of African Studies at University of Legon from July 1971 to July 1972, I traveled independently throughout the country from Accra to Bolgatanga. I visited schools and churches and recorded music and interviewed ghanian musicians. However, when I traveled to Ghana in July, 2009 with Equator3 Tours, I had the opportunity to attend the Panafest, visit more places and meet more people on the guided tours. I found Charles, our excellent tour guide, to be very knowledgeable, personable and professional. I was especially pleased to have the opportunity to tour the Mampong Plant Medicine Center to see how Ghanians are researching and recommending herbal medicine for treatment of many diseases. I enjoyed visiting the rainforest in Kakum National Park where we also had an excellent guide who taught us about the many species of butterflies, flora and fauna. Additionally, it was an exciting experience to walk across the rope bridge 100 feet above the forest floor. Although I had visited Cape Coast and Elmina Castle in 1971, I found that the slave castle experience with Equator3 was just as disturbing and emotional for me as it was on my first visit; but, this time with an excellent tour guide, I found it to be more educational. I would highly recommend the Equator3 African Heritage tour to people who want to learn more about their African culture and enjoy a safe and comfortable trip to the Motherland"
